Brooklyn is brownstone country, and brownstones have their own rules. The classic Brooklyn entry is a heavy wood or iron door with a surface-mounted jimmy-proof deadbolt — hardware that has been on these buildings for the better part of a century. Jimmy-Proof Locks and Brownstone Doors

The interlocking jimmy-proof deadbolt is the default lock across Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights. Mounted on the surface of the door rather than inside it, it resists the prying that a wood frame is vulnerable to — but it wears, it goes out of alignment as old buildings settle, and it is often installed wrong to begin with. We install and repair them properly, and we also know when a door is solid enough to take a mortise or deadbolt upgrade instead.

Converted Lofts and New Construction

North Brooklyn is a different problem set. The converted warehouses of Williamsburg, Greenpoint and DUMBO have commercial steel doors and oversized frames now serving as apartments, and the new towers going up along the waterfront use modern Grade 1 hardware and electronic access. We work both — rekeying and repairing the heavy commercial doors in loft conversions, and installing smart keypads and access hardware in newer buildings where the wiring and fire codes allow it.

Storefronts and Small Business

Brooklyn’s commercial corridors — Flatbush, Fulton, Fifth Avenue, Bedford — run on high-traffic hardware that takes a beating. The recurring jobs are commercial leversets and door knobs that wear out, panic bars that stop latching cleanly, and lock changes when a business or a lease turns over. Recent examples: a keypad lock and a panic bar repair on one building entrance near Bedford & N 7th in Williamsburg, and a commercial lever lockset near Front & Main in DUMBO.

Apartment Lockouts and Move-Ins

Most residential calls are lockouts and move-in rekeys. A recent lock change near Flatbush & Atlantic replaced the old knob and deadbolt with a new set, so only the new tenants hold keys. If you have just taken over a place, rekeying is often enough; we will tell you honestly if your door needs a new lock instead.
