Residential Locksmith — Apartments, Brownstones & Walk-Ups

Moving into a new place? Change or rekey the locks before you unpack — you have no idea how many copies of the old key are floating around. In April we did a full A-to-Z lock change near Flatbush Ave & Atlantic Ave for new tenants: old hardware out, high-security locks in, and now they are the only ones holding keys. When the existing hardware is good, a rekey gets the same result for less.

Plenty of buildings have rules about what goes on the door — hallway finish requirements, existing building keyways, self-closing hinges. We deal with supers and management companies weekly, so new hardware goes in without a fight with the co-op board. Finishes get matched to the hallway standard where it matters.

Apartment & Condo Door Security

In June we installed a jimmy-proof lock near Clark St & Henry St in Brooklyn Heights — the classic New York surface-mounted deadbolt that cannot be pried open with a bar, and still the right answer for a lot of apartment doors. The same month we supplied and installed a new deadbolt at Eastern Pkwy & Utica Ave in Crown Heights, and in May a high-security deadbolt change in Elmhurst.

The small jobs count too. In April we changed a mailbox lock near 181st St & St Nicholas Ave in Washington Heights — lost mailbox keys are one of the most common calls we get from renters, and a new cylinder restores mail access in one short visit. We also handle sliding-door locks, window locks, and hardware for fire-escape windows on ground-floor units.

Mortise Lock Service & Repair

A big share of our residential work is old doors. In April we replaced a full mortise lock set at 72nd St & Broadway on the Upper West Side — a pre-war door where a modern cylindrical lock simply does not fit without butchering the wood. The thing about mortise locks: they rarely need full replacement. Most of the time a new cylinder or spindle brings the original mechanism back to life. And when a client wants real key control on a pre-war door, we fit a Mul-T-Lock MT5+ cylinder into the existing mortise body — the door keeps its hundred-year-old face, the lock gets a modern brain.

Commercial Locksmith — Storefronts, Offices & Access Control

Our recent commercial run tells the story better than adjectives: in June we replaced a failed Adams Rite lock on a storefront at 116th St & Broadway in Morningside Heights, in July we repaired a commercial leverset at E 116th St & 5th Ave in East Harlem, and this spring we installed heavy-duty leversets in DUMBO and at 567 W 125th St in West Harlem. Storefront doors in this city are mostly narrow-stile aluminum, which takes specific hardware — we carry the parts on the van.

On the access-control side, in June we installed a commercial electric strike in Times Square, tied into the building's buzzer system. Master Key Systems & Key Control

A well-built master key system is a hierarchy: the grand master opens everything, sub-masters open departments, individual keys open one door. We design these for multi-tenant buildings and offices, and we keep the keying records — so when you add a door two years from now, it fits the system instead of breaking it.

For fast key control, interchangeable cores are hard to beat. In April we swapped IC cores for a client — the lock is rekeyed in minutes by exchanging the core, no hardware comes off the door. For businesses worried about key copying, restricted keyways like Medeco mean a key cannot be duplicated at a hardware store; copies only come through a licensed service with authorization.

Panic Bars & Exit Devices

In July we rebuilt a heavy-duty vertical panic bar at W 52nd St & 10th Ave in Hell's Kitchen, and in June we set up an exit door at Canal St & West Broadway in TriBeCa with a Detex alarm and a new closer. The point of this hardware is doing two opposite things at once: anyone inside gets out instantly, nobody outside gets in.

Door closers are the unglamorous half of that equation — a door that does not close is a lock that does not lock. Automotive Locksmith — Car Keys, Fobs & Ignitions

Most automotive calls we get start the same way: the only key is gone, and the dealer wants the car towed in and a week to sort it out. We do the same job at the curb. Every van carries a key-cutting machine and the diagnostic programmer needed to talk to the car's immobilizer, so we cut and program a new transponder key or smart fob on the spot — even when zero working keys are left. This past May we did exactly that for a driver at Wyckoff Ave & Myrtle Ave in Bushwick: new car key cut and programmed on-site, no tow, back on the road the same visit. Lost All Your Keys? Here's What Actually Happens

The technician pulls the key code from the vehicle, cuts a fresh blade on the machine in the van, then plugs the programmer into the OBD port and pairs the new chip with the immobilizer. On most models the whole thing takes under an hour. Worn key that barely turns anymore? We cut the replacement from the factory code, not by copying your worn key — a copy of a bad key is just another bad key.

Fobs are the same story: we pair remote lock and unlock functions to the car, replace cracked fob shells, and swap dead batteries while we're there. No appointment weeks out, no dealership pricing.

Ignitions & Broken Keys

When a key suddenly stops turning, the problem is usually worn wafers inside the ignition cylinder — not the key. 24/7 Emergency Lockouts — Rapid Response

In April a client was locked out at Delancey St & Essex St on the Lower East Side. We opened the door non-destructively — picked, not drilled — so there was nothing to replace afterward. That is the standard we aim for on every lockout: the cheapest emergency call is the one where the only thing you pay for is the opening.

Commercial & Office Lockouts

A locked storefront at 9 AM costs real money by 9:30, so business lockouts jump the queue. We open retail storefronts and office suites, including doors fitted with high-security hardware. If an employee walked off with a master key, we rekey the affected doors before the next shift starts.

We also get the calls nobody plans for: magnetic locks and electric strikes that fail closed, and storefront locks damaged in break-in attempts. The doors of this city are not interchangeable, and neither is the hardware. Brownstones and pre-war walk-ups have thick wood doors cut for mortise locks — like the front door we repaired at 134 Montague St in Brooklyn Heights in June — and narrow frames that only accept slim-profile deadbolts. Putting the wrong lock on an old door ruins both.

On the other end: in April we installed a Mul-T-Lock high-security system for an apartment client and upgraded the locks on a luxury residence with custom oversized doors. Those doors need extended backset latches and custom strike plates that a hardware store does not stock. We source them, and we match finishes — oil-rubbed bronze, satin nickel, polished brass — so the security upgrade does not fight the interior.

High-Rise & Luxury Condo Security

High-rise work is half locksmithing, half coordination. Most luxury buildings run a master key system, so we work with the superintendent to fit new locks into the building's existing keyway, and we install the self-closing hinges many buildings require on apartment entry doors.

Smart Locks & Keypad Entry

In April we installed a new keypad system near Bedford Ave & N 7th St in Williamsburg — and rebuilt the door's panic bar in the same visit. Keypads solve a specific New York problem: keys that get copied. A tenant moves out, you delete their code. A dog walker starts, you add one. Nobody is standing at a hardware store duplicating anything.

That same month we did a from-scratch smart keypad deadbolt installation, including drilling and prepping a door that never had a deadbolt. The part people underestimate is mechanical: if the bolt binds against the strike plate, the motor strains and the lock dies young. We align the hardware so the bolt glides — that is the difference between a smart lock that lasts and one that fails in a year.

Biometric & Keypad Integration

We install fingerprint locks and touchscreen keypads, and we calibrate the sensors so they read reliably — a biometric lock that works four times out of five is worse than a key. Keypad deadbolts get temporary PIN codes for cleaners, contractors, and guests, revoked the moment they are no longer needed.

For remote control we set up the Wi-Fi bridge and connect the lock to your phone, and we troubleshoot existing smart locks that misbehave. Nine times out of ten a "broken" smart lock is a mechanical alignment problem wearing the motor down — we fix the alignment, not just the symptom.
