Why Smart Lock Installs Fail — and How We Do Them

Here is the thing nobody tells you when you buy a smart lock online: the electronics are the easy part. The part that kills smart locks is mechanical. If the bolt binds against the strike plate even slightly, the motor strains on every cycle, drains batteries in weeks, and burns out in a year. When we install a smart lock, most of the visit goes into the boring work — aligning the door, adjusting the strike, making sure the bolt glides with zero resistance. That is the difference between a smart lock that lasts and the one your neighbor already replaced twice.

Fresh Installations on Doors Without a Deadbolt

The from-scratch job we did in April started with a door that had never had a deadbolt: we bored the cross hole and edge hole, cut the strike mortise into the frame, and then mounted and programmed the keypad deadbolt. If your door only has a knob lock, that is the install you need — and it is not a DIY hole to get wrong on a metal or pre-war wood door.

The Williamsburg keypad job in April is the typical use case: a door that too many people had keys to. With a keypad, a tenant moves out and you delete their code that minute. We install keypad deadbolts from the major manufacturers — Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, August — and we will tell you plainly which models we keep seeing fail and which ones survive New York doors. Most quality models keep a physical backup keyway; we can also rekey that backup cylinder to match your building key so you carry one key instead of two.

Wi-Fi, Apps and Remote Access

For remote control we set up the Wi-Fi bridge, connect the lock to your phone, and test lock and unlock from outside your network before we leave. App notifications tell you when the door opens — useful for knowing the kids got home or the contractor actually showed up.

Biometric and Fingerprint Locks

Fingerprint locks are only as good as their calibration — a biometric lock that reads four times out of five is worse than a key. We enroll prints properly, test with the actual household's fingers, and set up PIN fallback so a wet finger never locks you out.

Fixing Smart Locks That Misbehave

We get called weekly for "broken" smart locks, and nine times out of ten the electronics are fine — the bolt is binding and wearing the motor down. We realign the door and strike, and the lock comes back to life. If your smart lock eats batteries or grinds when it throws the bolt, that is the problem, and it is fixable. When the lock really is dead, we replace it and reuse the door prep.

Building Rules and Backup Plans

Co-ops and condo buildings often have rules about door hardware, and supers care about the building keyway. We deal with building management regularly — the same coordination we do on high-security installs — so your smart lock goes in without a violation letter. And we always leave you with a working mechanical backup: a keyway, a 9-volt contact point, or both, so a dead battery is an inconvenience instead of a lockout.
