You have no idea how many copies of your new front door key exist. The previous tenant made some, their roommate made some, the contractor who renovated the kitchen kept one. Pre-War Doors and Mortise Locks
A large share of our lock changes are on pre-war doors, and those are a different animal. In April we replaced a complete mortise lock set at 72nd St & Broadway on the Upper West Side, and the same week another full mortise set change in Sunset Park. In July we did one more at Avenue U & East 66th St in Mill Basin. Mortise bodies sit in a deep pocket cut into the door edge, and the replacement has to match those pocket dimensions exactly — get it wrong and the door is ruined. We measure first, and we carry the common pre-war sizes on the van.

Shared building doors get slammed hundreds of times a day, so builder-grade hardware dies fast on them. For landlords we install Grade 2 or Grade 1 hardware on tenant doors and keep the keying uniform across units, which makes turnover and maintenance far simpler. When a building wants every apartment on distinct keys but the super on one master, that becomes a small master key system — we build those too.
The Hardware We Actually Install
High-Security Cylinders: Medeco and Mul-T-Lock
When a client wants real key control, we install Medeco M4 or Mul-T-Lock MT5+. The point of these is not just pick resistance — it is that the keys cannot be copied at a hardware store. Copies only come through a licensed dealer with your authorization card. We installed a full Mul-T-Lock system for an apartment client this spring; the photos are on our work page. For most doors we pair the high-security cylinder with the existing hardware, so you pay for the cylinder, not a whole new lockset.
Standard Deadbolts That Earn Their Keep
Not every door needs a Medeco. For a straightforward upgrade we install Schlage Grade 1 deadbolts — like the brand-new deadbolt we supplied and installed at Eastern Pkwy & Utica Ave in Crown Heights in June, and the high-security deadbolt change in Elmhurst in May. A well-fitted Grade 1 deadbolt with a reinforced strike plate stops the attacks that actually happen to apartment doors: prying and kicking.
Strike Plates — the Cheap Upgrade Everyone Skips
The lock is only as strong as the frame it bolts into. A standard strike plate is held by two short screws in soft wood; a kick lands on those screws. When we change a lock we offer to swap in a heavy-duty strike plate anchored with 3-inch screws that reach the wall stud. Lock Change vs. Rekey — the Honest Answer
Rekeying changes the pins inside your existing cylinder so old keys stop working. It is cheaper, and if your hardware is in good shape it is usually the right call — we say so even though it is the smaller ticket. A full lock change is the right call when the hardware is worn, damaged, or builder-grade junk, or when you want to move up to high-security or smart hardware anyway. Either way old keys die that day.
Smart and Keyless Options
Plenty of lock changes now end with a keypad instead of a key. In April we did a from-scratch smart keypad deadbolt installation, including drilling a door that never had a deadbolt. Codes for family, temporary codes for the dog walker, delete a code the day a roommate moves out. If the door and frame are aligned properly — and we make sure they are — a good electronic deadbolt is as tough as its mechanical cousin.

Lost mailbox keys are one of the most common renter calls we get, and a new cam lock takes minutes.
