How a Master Key System Is Actually Built
Every cylinder in the system is pinned to answer two keys: its own individual key and the master above it. Done casually, this quietly multiplies the number of accidental "ghost keys" that can open doors nobody intended. Done properly, it starts on paper — a keying chart that maps every door, every access level, and every planned expansion — before a single pin is set. We build the chart first, then pin the cylinders to it.
A Typical Layout
A small office building we service runs like this: the owner's grand master opens all doors; the office manager's sub-master opens the suite but not the server room; each employee key opens the front door and their own office only; the cleaning crew's key works weekday evenings on common areas via a separate keyway. Five access levels, one key per pocket. That is the entire product: fewer keys, more control.
The Records Are Half the Value
Two years after installation, someone always needs a new door added, a fired manager's access revoked, or a lost sub-master dealt with. If the installer kept no records, the answer is "rekey everything." Because we document every system we build — chart, pinning, key codes — the answer is usually a single cylinder change. When we lock changed a business at St. Marks Place & 2nd Ave in the East Village this April, the paperwork took as long as the cylinders; that is by design.

A master key system without restricted keys leaks. Any employee can copy their key at a kiosk in five minutes, and your carefully designed hierarchy now has an unknown number of members. We build systems on restricted keyways — Medeco and Mul-T-Lock — where blanks are not publicly sold and every copy requires your authorization card at a licensed dealer. Tenant keys open the street door and one apartment; the super's master opens mechanical rooms and common areas; the owner's grand master opens everything. When a tenant moves out, one cylinder gets rekeyed and the system is whole again — no other tenant is touched.
Offices, Retail and Warehouses
Stock rooms, cash offices, server rooms, loading doors — each gets its own tier. Managers carry one key instead of nine, and when a key walks off with a departing employee, the exposure is exactly known instead of assumed. Existing Buildings — No Rip-Out Required
Most of our master key work happens on buildings that already have locks. We survey the existing hardware, keep what is serviceable, and re-pin or re-cylinder rather than replace — pre-war mortise bodies included, since Medeco and Mul-T-Lock cylinders fit them. The result costs a fraction of new hardware on every door and preserves doors that should not be drilled twice. How much does a master key system cost?
It scales with doors and tiers: re-pinning existing cylinders into a small office system costs far less than new restricted-keyway hardware on forty doors. We survey the building, keep the hardware that is serviceable, and quote per door — the survey tells you the real number before you commit.
What happens if a master key is lost?
With our keying records, we identify exactly which cylinders that key opened and rekey only those — often the same day. Without records (a system someone else installed), we can reverse-engineer the system, but this is the expensive scenario, and it is why we document everything we build.
Can employees copy their keys at a hardware store?
Not if the system is built on restricted keyways, which is how we build them. Medeco and Mul-T-Lock blanks are not sold to the public, and copies require your authorization card at a licensed dealer — so every key in circulation is one you approved.
Can you add a master key system to our existing locks?
Usually yes. Most commercial cylinders can be re-pinned into a hierarchy, and pre-war mortise bodies accept modern high-security cylinders. We survey first, reuse what is serviceable, and replace only what is genuinely worn out.
