Transponder Key NYC — Cut & Programmed On-Site

NYC License #2096389-DCA

Nearly every car since the late 1990s has a chip in the key that must talk to the immobilizer — cut the metal correctly without programming the chip and the key turns in the door but the engine stays dead. Sunny Locksmith cuts and programs transponder keys at the curb across NYC. This past May we did exactly that for a driver at Wyckoff Ave & Myrtle Ave in Bushwick — all keys lost, cut and programmed on-site, no tow. Photos on our recent jobs page. Licensed NYC #2096389-DCA. Why the Hardware Store Copy Fails

Kiosks copy the blade. The immobilizer wants a chip it recognizes. Two separate jobs — cutting and programming — and we do both at the car through the OBD port. That is why the Bushwick job took under an hour end to end: code from the vehicle, fresh blade, chip paired, engine start tested.

All Keys Lost

You do not need a working key to program a new transponder. All-keys-lost pulls what is needed from the vehicle itself — longer and costlier than adding a spare, but you drive home same visit. Make a spare while you still have one working key; the price roughly doubles when you have zero.

Erasing Stolen Keys

When we program a replacement for a lost or stolen key, we erase the old one from the immobilizer. A stolen transponder key that still starts your car is a liability we eliminate during every replacement programming session.

Remote Head Keys and Fobs

Many transponder keys include remote buttons in the head — see remote head key service. Separate fobs go through key fob programming. Push-to-start proximity systems use smart keys — same immobilizer concept, different form factor.

When the Key Is Fine and the Car Still Won't Start

Key turns, security light behaves, no crank: probably not the transponder — mechanic territory. Key will not turn: ignition repair. Locked out with keys inside: car lockout. We triage honestly on the phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you program a transponder key with no working keys?

Yes — all-keys-lost is routine. The Bushwick job in May had zero working keys; we cut and programmed at the car and the driver left same visit.

Why does my copied key open the door but not start the car?

Because the copy got the blade right and skipped the chip. Transponder keys need programming through the OBD port — what kiosks cannot do.

Can you erase my stolen transponder key?

Yes — during programming we delete lost keys from the immobilizer so they cannot start the vehicle.

How long does transponder key service take?

Adding a key when one works is a short visit. All-keys-lost takes longer — we confirm timing when we quote. Everything at the car — no tow.
