Car Key Programming NYC — Transponders & Fobs, On-Site
Programming is the invisible half of every modern car key: the blade opens the door, but only a chip paired with your car's immobilizer starts the engine. Sunny Locksmith programs transponder keys and fobs at the curb across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens — the same on-site process we used this May at Wyckoff Ave & Myrtle Ave in Bushwick, where a driver with no working key drove off the same visit (photos on our recent jobs page). Licensed NYC #2096389-DCA. Call (917) 495-1990.

What Programming Actually Is
Since the late 1990s, virtually every car has an immobilizer: the engine computer refuses to run unless it detects a chip it recognizes inside the key. Programming means introducing a new chip to that computer — done with a diagnostic programmer plugged into the OBD port under your dash. No amount of key cutting substitutes for it, which is why the kiosk copy that opens your door goes silent in the ignition.
The On-Site Procedure
The technician connects the programmer to the OBD port, puts the immobilizer into learn mode, pairs the new key or fob, and then tests everything that key is supposed to do — start, doors, trunk, remote buttons. Most models are done in one short visit. It happens wherever the car is parked: your street, your office garage, the supermarket lot where the key decided to die.
All Keys Lost — Still Programmable
You do not need a working key to program a new one. All-keys-lost programming pulls what is needed from the vehicle itself — it takes longer and costs more than adding a spare, but it ends with you driving, not towing. That was the Bushwick job in May: zero working keys at the start, driving the same visit. Details on the cutting side at car key replacement.
What We Program
Transponder Chips
The classic chipped key — turn-to-start cars from roughly 1998 onward. We program new transponder keys and clone existing ones where the platform allows it, for domestic, European, and Asian brands.
Remote Fobs and Proximity Keys
Remote-entry fobs get their lock, unlock, trunk, and panic buttons synced to the car; push-to-start proximity fobs get full immobilizer pairing. Both are curbside jobs — see key fob programming and smart key replacement.
Erasing Keys That Should Not Work Anymore
Programming sessions are also when lost and stolen keys get deleted from the car's memory. If your key ring was stolen last month and nobody erased the old key when you replaced it, that stolen key still starts your car today. We erase by default when a key is reported lost or stolen — ask any locksmith who programs your keys to confirm they do the same.
When Programming Is Not the Problem
Honest triage saves money. Key turns but the engine will not crank and the security light is off: likely battery or starter, not the key — call your mechanic first. Key will not physically turn in the ignition: usually worn wafers in the cylinder, which is ignition repair territory. Remote works but the car will not start: possibly the immobilizer antenna. Describe the symptoms when you call and we will tell you which trade you actually need — even when it is not us.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can any key be programmed to any car?
No — the key or fob must be the right type for your make, model, and year, and some platforms also reject previously-paired chips. Give us those three details when you call and we confirm compatibility before the van rolls, whether it is our key or one you bought.
Do I need a working key to program a new one?
No. All-keys-lost programming works from the vehicle itself — it takes longer than adding a spare but ends with you driving the same visit, like the Bushwick job this May. If you still have one working key, programming a spare now is quicker and cheaper.
How long does key programming take?
Adding a key or fob when a working one exists is a short visit. All-keys-lost takes longer — we confirm timing when we quote. Everything happens at the car through the OBD port — no tow, no dealership appointment.
Can you erase my stolen key so it will not start the car?
Yes, and it should be non-negotiable: during programming we delete lost or stolen keys from the immobilizer memory, so the old key becomes useless metal even if someone is holding it right now. It takes minutes and we do it by default.
